On June 21, 2023, 33-year-old Tanu married Arun Singh after her father, Hakim, arranged the high-profile wedding with dowry and gifts. Soon after moving to her marital home in Faridabad, Haryana, Tanu experienced ongoing altercations with her husband Arun and mother-in-law Sonia. Due to continuous abuse and disputes, Tanu returned to her maternal home in Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh, staying there for nearly a year. A village council (panchayat) intervened in September 2023, advising her father to pay additional money to settle the dispute, after which Tanu returned to her in-laws. Escalations continued, leading to further panchayat interventions. Shortly thereafter, the in-laws altered their behavior, exhibiting sudden warmth toward Tanu for two months. However, on April 22, Tanu suddenly went missing. Her father-in-law, Bhup Singh, filed a missing person report, printed reward posters, and feigned search efforts alongside Tanu's maternal family. Unconvinced, Tanu's father analyzed neighbor accounts and scanned 6 to 10 hours of local CCTV footage daily, noticing Tanu had never left the vicinity. He identified suspicious construction outside the marital home, where a fresh pit was dug, cemented, and plastered right around the time of her disappearance without any plausible plumbing need. Suspecting foul play, her father alerted Naveen Nagar Police. Upon police interrogation, Bhup Singh confidently offered to let them dig up the plastered pit.
